Artists Ivanovska and Chalovski to represent Macedonia at Venice Biennale

The project dubbed “We all are alone in this” by Hristina Ivanovska and Jane Chalovski will represent Macedonia at the 56th Venice Biennale of Visual Arts which will take place from May 9 to November 22.

The project includes an installation with three walls architectonically and mathematically portraying the dimension of 12th century-old “St. Gjorgji” Church in Kurbinovo in 1:2 ratio. Both artists through their work are engaged in faith as emotional and intellectual conditions and as special socio-pathological anomaly.

The commission that made the selection said that the project is quality and state-of-the-art created project, compatible with world trends, artistically highly developed, technically very easily feasible and comprehensible for experts and wider audience.

“Authors Ivanovska and Chalovski offer serious artistic quality and innovation, clear and modern concept, technical feasibility, communication with audience and stylish interpretation of contemporary Macedonian art”, Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska – Milevska said at Friday’s press conference.

The project fits into this year’s topic of the Venice Biennale “All the World’s Futures” by artistic director Okwui Enwezor symbolically unites national pavilions of 53 countries in the world thus creating relevant center of current global cultural, political and economic developments.

“We all are alone in this” is created in several stages and emerges from strong interest for re-contextualization of art work by anonymous author from Kurbinovo in modern concepts for research and concept-based art.

Ivanovska and Chalovski has been working together since 2000 and made successful artistic works and participated at numerous independent and group exhibitions.
