Brima Gallup poll: VMRO-DPMNE has huge lead over SDSM two weeks before elections

Macedonian citizens’ trust for VMRO-DPMNE leader, Nikola Gruevski, is almost double than the one for SDSM leader, Zoran Zaev. 25.8% of voters would vote for the ruling party VMRO-DPMNE and for the opposition party SDSM 16.7%. Of the party leaders in Macedonia, VMRO-DPMNE’s Nikola Gruevski enjoys more support than SDSM’s Zoran Zaev, show results of the latest opinion poll conducted by the Brima Galup research agency.

If we single out the responses of the Macedonians respondents who were part of this opinion poll, VMRO-DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski enjoys confidence among 28.6 percent of the Macedonian voters. 13.1 percent of the Macedonian respondents said that they trust SDSM president Zaev.

Renowned independent research agency of public opinion, “Brima Gallup”, which works for the International Republican Institute (IRI) based in Washington, at the request and in cooperation with the weekly magazine “Republika”, from 11 to 17 November conducted a field survey for the opinion of citizens in regard to issues related to the current political topics, during which time 1,006 respondents aged over 18 were polled.

Given the fact that in all the previous elections, the ethnic Albanians in Macedonia almost hundred percent voted for the political parties of the Albanian political campus, we are publishing the results of a survey that are referring to the opinion of the Macedonians. At the same time, Macedonian voters in elections in most rates provide their support to VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM, the research is generally directed to the issues relating to these two political parties, except for the answers to the question about the ratings of the political parties, where apart from the Macedonian electorate it was taken into account the overall opinion of all ethnic groups (Macedonians, Albanians, Turks, Serbs, Roma, Vlachs, Bosniaks and others) in order to get a realistic portrayal of the opinion of the citizens of all relevant political parties in the country.

When asked, provided that all parties were participating, which party would you vote for if parliamentary elections were to be held next week, 25.8% of respondents said they would vote for VMRO-DPMNE and 16.7% would vote for SDSM. 14.1% said they were undecided, 11.5% provided no response. 7.3% said they wouldn’t vote in the elections with 4.5% saying they didn’t know. Support in percentages surveyed amongst the Macedonian electorate is 35.9% for VMRO-DPMNE and 21.6% for SDSM.

According to the poll, living standards (30.3%), employment (22%) and rising salaries (20.9) are some of the highest priorities for the citizens.

The best solution to the issue involving living standards is offered by VMRO-DPMNE (26%) and for 16.8% it is offered by SDSM, shows the poll.

33 percent of all respondents said that VMRO-DPMNE is more active in their community to get the support of the population, and only 15.2% believe that it is SDSM.

That difference is much higher among the Macedonian respondents  – 45.5 percent were in favor of the ruling VMRO-DPMNE and 19.8 percent in favor of SDSM.

The opinion poll was conducted using face-to-face method in the homes of those who were interviewed. Only one representative of a family selected randomly was interviewed.

Margin of error of ± 3 percent.
