20 civil associations and organizations staged Monday a protest in downtown Skopje against growing air pollution and high PM10 concentration in several cities in Macedonia, including the capital Skopje and Tetovo.

Protesters, wearing masks and carrying banners, called on the authorities to take concrete measures in order to curb or reduce air pollution and take into consideration medium- and long-term measures on improving air quality.

The civil organizations urged all institutions in charge of tackling air pollution to take adequate measures until January 15. If the demand is not met, protesters will start blocking streets in the cities most affected by air pollution, namely Skopje, Bitola and Tetovo, they said.

At an emergency session on Sunday, the government reached several conclusions and recommendations, including pregnant women and people over 60 to get days off work until January 4.
