Education strike called off

Macedonia’s Union of education, science and culture employees (SONK) announced on Tuesday evening that it is suspending the strike it called two weeks ago.

After holding a council meeting together with top education and labor Government ministers, SONK’s Council decided to stop the strike.

Education and Science Ministry announced that they will begin an intensive social dialogue with SONK. The union demanded a 25 percent pay increase and a stop to a testing regimen that tied teachers pay to the statistical compliance between the grade they gave and actual knowledge by students.

SONK’s strike was announced to start at the beginning of the second half of the school year. Most schools remained open, with teachers in only several municipalities fully complying with the call to stop lectures. Before it decided to cancel the strike, SONK also planned to hold a rally on Wednesday.
