Employment rate boosted in past decade with 160,000 jobs

Efforts are still being made to reduce unemployment despite creating 160,000 jobs in the past 10 years. Job creation is still our primary goal, VMRO-DPMNE Nikola Gruevski told reporters on Sunday.

He said unemployment was considered the number one problem all over the country. “Gevgelija is also affected by this problem even though a breakthrough has been made. Of 3,900 jobless people registered in December 2005, now this figure has been reduced to 1,645 unemployed people. This means that the unemployment rate in the region of Gevgelija has been reduced 60%,” Gruevski said adding the figure was significantly over the average recorded in other regions of the country.

“The overall business climate created by us, including taxes, laws, facilitation of many procedures, combat against corruption, etc, has yielded some results encouraging domestic companies to expand production, i.e. the number of staff, and motivating foreign companies to open production plants in Macedonia and this trend is still ongoing,” he stated during his visit to the region of Gevgelija in south Macedonia.

In the past decade, Gruevski said, not only was the unemployment rate reduced from 38% to 24%, but also the employment rate was increased with 160,000 employees.

According to him, the achievement comes as the result of a lot of hard work. “However, a lot more should be done,” Gruevski vowed.
