FM Poposki visits Strasbourg in honor of 20. anniversary of Macedonia’s accession to CoE


Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki visited the Council of Europe on Wednesday in honor of the 20th anniversary of Macedonia’s accession to the oldest European organization.

During the visit, Poposki held talks with CoE Secretary General Thorbjrn Jagland. At the meeting Poposki reaffirmed Macedonia’s commitment to consistent implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights and all European standards on human rights, democracy and rule of law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.

Jagland thanked Macedonia on its contribution not only to applying, but also to preparing new standards and instruments for protection and advancement of the human rights in Europe.

He also expressed interest in the current political developments in Macedonia, including the ones related to the inflow of migrants and refugees.

Poposki also had a meeting with the President of the European Court on Human Rights Guido Raimondi. The two highlighted the Court’s role in the European architecture for protection of human rights. Poposki reaffirmed Macedonia’s support of the Court’s reform and full implementation of its rulings.

At a reception on the anniversary, Poposki affirmed Macedonia’s commitment to be active participant in creating of new and advancing the existing standards in the spheres of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, which is rather significant for the country’s bid to join the EU.
