Government confirms it paid Zaev supporters to promote the amendments

Last week’s public debates on the four proposed amendments used to rename Macedonia into North Macedonia were widely criticized as completely one-sided, with only supporters of the proposal invited to speak with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and his deputies. And today it was revealed that the invitees were paid 20.000 denars to promote Zaev’s positions.

– The Government provided payments to the experts who prepared essays which were promoted during the public discussions. They were paid 20.000 denars (350 EUR), confirmed Government spokesman Mile Bosnjakovski.

Similar criticism was leveled against the Government during the referendum on the name change, when public funds were used to exclusively (and lavishly) promote only the Yes side of the argument. The referendum failed due to a grass roots boycott campaign, when only 36 percent of the voters turned out to vote.
