Government to release tender for universal household electricity supplier

The Government released Monday a tender for a universal household electricity supplier.

The tender, which runs through December 3, is open for all 28 licensed electricity suppliers. The Government expects the procedure to be completed by the year-end, with supply to launch on 1 March 2019.

Vice Premier for Economic Affairs Koco Angjusev said state-owned company Macedonian Power Plants (ELEM) should be the pillar for protection of the electricity price of citizens by giving a percentage of its output to the universal supplier.

ELEM is set to give 80 percent of its production to the universal supplier and the amount will reduce by ten percent every year, reaching 30 percent by 2025.

“Taking into consideration that 40-50 percent of the ELEM production meets the households’ needs, the citizens’ interest will be covered in the next five years,” added Angjusev.

The universal supplier will be selected through an e-auction, with the president of the selecting committee to come from the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, along with members from the Government, Ministry of Economy and the Energy Regulatory Committee.
