Greek, German foreign ministers discuss name issue in Berlin

Nikos Kotzias and Frank-Walter Steinmeier

The name issue was one of the topics at Tuesday’s meeting between the Greek and German Foreign Ministers, Nikos Kotzias and Frank-Walter Steinmeier respectively, MIA reports from Athens.

Citing diplomatic sources, Greek media report the topic was on the agenda “taking into consideration Berlin’s significant involvement in the Macedonia name issue through meetings with Western Balkan officials”.

Daily “Kathimerini” says Kotzias raised the issue, urging Berlin to make a move towards a compromise by Skopje.

Greek media have continually reported over “Germany’s increased influence on the Balkans”, especially after last year’s conference of Western Balkan states, held under the auspices of Chancellor Angela Merkel, where Macedonia was represented under its constitutional name, which is seen as a clear message to Athens over the German position on the issue.
