Incident in the Center for asylum seekers in Skopje

An incident was reported at the Center for asylum claimants in Skopje on Thursday evening. The Interior Ministry informed that eight of the migrants accommodated in the Center briefly barricaded themselves in a room.

The migrants used beds and other furniture to block the entrance, were chanting and were threatening that they will set fire to the room. Police officers went to the Center and after an hour, the situation in the Center was normalized.

Macedonia has experienced a large influx of refugees from the Middle East and Africa coming in from neighboring Greece in the past months. Most of them are trying to reach Serbia and continue their way north toward the more prosperous countries of the European Union, while some stay and apply for asylum in Macedonia.
