Jolevski: Macedonia remains committed to NATO and EU membership

The membership in NATO and EU remains our strategic priority. Integration processes in Euro-Atlantic structures have positive impact on peace, cooperation, security and economic and democratic development of the countries taking into the account the geopolitical changes in global frames, Defence Minister Zoran Jolevski said Wednesday addressing Future Forces Forum 2016 which takes place in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Jolevski who is accompanied by General Vasko Gjurcinovski, Joint Operations Command Commander at the forum, said that the reform processes in defence and other areas are continuing because they are beneficial for us, our citizens and for the process of Euro-Atlantic integration. In this context he thanked the host the Czech Republic for open and principle support for membership in NATO, Ministry of Defence said in a press release.

Dynamic development of the international security environment requires continuous monitoring and adapting to security threats and risks. The Republic of Macedonia belongs to Euro-Atlantic region and its security is indivisible from the security of the region and wider, Jolevski said.

He also added that the world is facing many challenges, risks and threats among which terrorism, transnational organised crime, hybrid war, illegal migration, etc. In regard to migration, Jolevski pointed out that due to its geographic position Macedonia last year was in complicated situation with everyday influx of migrants.

The current migrant crisis represents phenomenon unseen in recent history, phenomenon that surpasses national borders and requires global and regional coordinated engagement, Jolevski stressed.

On the sidelines of the forum, Jolevski met with General Josef Becvar, Chief of the General Staff of Armed Forces of the Czech Republic and General Petr Pavel, Chairman of NATO Military Committee.

At the meeting with General Becvar, Jolevski expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation between the armies.
