Responding to the attacks of New Democracy and its leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, following information published by Wikileaks, that former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski accepted the name Northern Macedonia in 2008, the Greek Foreign Minister Kotzias said that “it is well known that the Prime Minister of FYROM at the time, Nikola Gruevski, did not want to solve the issue (in this way):

“He ridiculed international players, saying he was being forced to compromise. Nobody trusted him except, if we recall, Mr. Mitsotakis,” said Kotzias.

He added, as Kathimerini reports, that the Wikileaks document shows that for domestic use Skopje wanted to use its constitutional name “Macedonia” without any modifications – a condition that New Democracy accepted.

Kotzias also added that New Democracy claimed that the best solution was the name “Northern Macedonia” which was again rejected by Gruevski.
