Leading Macedonian author and political activist Ljubisa Georgievski dies aged 81

One of the leading Macedonian intellectuals, politicians and dissidents, Ljubisa Georgievski, died aged 81.

Georgievski was best known as playwright author of “Black” and “Joan of Arc” and director of movies such as “Wraith Mountain” and “The Republic in Flames”. Often sidelined in the former Yugoslav federation because of his support for a Macedonian nation state and a democratic society, he was an early official of the conservative VMRO-DPMNE party and challenged Kiro Gligorov in the first open presidential elections in 1994.

In 2006 he was elected Speaker of the Macedonian Parliament, a position he held until 2008.
