Government measures extended – pregnant women released from work until Friday

Government measures for releasing pregnant women, elderly people over 60 years of age and people with asthma from working obligations due to the heavy air pollution in the regions of Skopje, Kicevo, Tetovo and Bitola are to resume until Friday.

Forecasters expect rain in Thursday and Friday that should bring higher temperatures and better air quality.

The Government will re-address the measures for curbing the air pollution on Friday. For the past several days, airborne particle concentrations in these cities have exceeded the highest permissible levels during freezing winter weather.

Last Tuesday the Environment Ministry instructed private companies and state institutions in the four cities to let pregnant woman and employees over the age of 60 remain at home. Kindergartens, primary and secondary schools were advised to avoid outdoor activities, and construction workers were warned to avoid work before 11 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Restrictions are also recommended for organizing outdoor sporting events and other cultural manifestations. Trucks have been banned from the city centers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
