Miss Mexico has been crowned winner of Miss World 2018

The winner of Miss World 2018 is a business graduate who quit modelling to focus on charity work.

Miss Mexico Vanessa Ponce de Leon, 26, was crowned winner of the beauty pageant during the finale held in Sanya, China.

She beat 117 other contestants to win the title, including runners-up Miss Thailand and Miss Uganda.

“I can’t believe it, I really can’t believe it, and I think all the girls deserved it,” Ponce de Leon said backstage.

“I am proud to represent all of them. I will do as much as I can in the time I have got. Thank you so much, everyone.”

The newly-crowned Miss World has a degree in International Business and has worked as a model and TV host.

More recently, she shifted focus to her charity work, including volunteering for Migrantes en el Camino and serving on the board of directors of a rehab centre for girls.

According to E! News, she is the first Miss Mexico to nab the Miss World title in the pageant’s 68-year run.

In an interview ahead of her coronation dinner, Ponce de Leon admitted she was “going through a process” as she adapted to people referring to her by her new title, rather than Miss Mexico.
