Police arrests 8 suspects of smuggling cigarettes, seizing 19,480 cigarette packs (VIDEO)

Eight persons were arrested late Tuesday suspected of cigarette smuggling. According to the Macedonian Ministry of Internal Affairs, it is about seven citizens of Kriva Palanka and one citizen of village Dramce. Four other suspects of smuggling cigarettes from Macedonian to Bulgaria are on the run.

As MoI informs, 19,480 cigarette packs worth about EUR 40,000 have been seized, dismantling a criminal group which has been smuggling cigarettes for a longer period of time.

The operation took place near the border stone 62 in the part of border crossing between Macedonia with Bulgaria. During the police’s efforts to stop the vehicle Ford Explorer with Bulgarian registration plate, which was directed towards the village Pancarevo, Delcevo, the driver turned the vehicle towards the police officers, intending to run over them, broke through the ambush and fled.

According to MoI’s statement, the police officers used their firearms, in compliance with their police powers. After half an hour search for the vehicle, it was found abandoned after it crashed, uncontrolled, into a tree along the road.

An insight has been performed at the scene of the found vehicle, finding 19,480 cigarette packs, 6,500 of which were Merlyn Slims without excise stamp and 12,980 were York with Macedonian excise stamp.
