Police name Strasbourg suspect as manhunt continues

Police have identified the Strasbourg shooter as Cherif Chekatt, 29, from the same French city bordering Germany. He is known to authorities and remains at large. French police have appealed to the public not to approach the suspect if they see him and to call emergency services instead as he may be dangerous and armed.

Two people have been killed – a Thai tourist and a French-Afghan citizen – and another left brain dead after Chekatt opened fire at a Christmas market in Strasbourg on Tuesday evening. Around a dozen people were injured, half seriously.

The gunman shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire and is said is said to have been radicalised while he was in prison.

Hundreds of police in France and Germany have been dispatched to look for Chekatt, who was injured during a gun fight with police.
