President Ivanov will make his final state of the union address on December 28th

President Gjorge Ivanov announced that he will make his final state of the union in the last year of his second term on December 28th. Ivanov will address the nation from the Parliament, in a speech which usually presents his views on national issues.

The speech comes at a time when the Government is exerting pressure on the President, in an attempt to involve his officials in the trial related to the 2017 incident in the Parliament. Ivanov is crucial in the Government’s attempt to quickly amend the Constitution and rename Macedonia into North Macedonia, and he said that the pressure on him is an attempt to force him to sign the proposed constitutional amendments. He also refused to sign a law on broadening the use of the Albanian language beyond the provisions of the Ohrid treaty, which he says he considers unconstitutional.
