VMRO-DPMNE joins forces with the Alliance of Albanians to elect new Debar mayor

In the Debar city council, VMRO-DPMNE formed a local level coalition with the Alliance for Albanians, BESA and PE to elect Alliance representative Eugen Cami as the new mayor, after former mayor Ruzdi Lata died after a brief illness.

The coalition between VMRO-DPMNE and several parties representing ethnic Albanians was seen as a warning sign by the SDSM led Government, which depends on ethnic Albanian voters to keep it afloat. VMRO-DPMNE and the Alliance of Albanians combined their three seats in the Council with the two from BESA and one from PE to elect Cami. SDSM and their ethnic Albanian partner DUI were left with seven votes in the 15 seats Council. The Alliance of Albanians left the coalition with SDSM over an ugly electoral fight to control the city of Gostivar in the 2017 municipal elections, and is now the main opposition party in the ethnic Albanian camp.

Cami will remain in office until elections can be called to elect a permanent mayor, mostly likely along with the presidential elections planned for next spring.
