Zaev asked Hungarian socialist opposition leader for his help to extradite Gruevski

Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, who is attending the Party of European Socialists meeting in Portugal, asked Hungarian Socialist leader Bertalan Toth for help to ensure former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is extradited back to Macedonia. Gruevski received political asylum in Hungary after a series of politically motivated criminal charges were filed against him.

Zaev’s party SDSM said that during the meeting with Toth, Zaev said that it is important to maintain rule of law and “that he expects concrete support” in this regard, and that “Hungarian authorities will act in accordance with European principles and international norms and extradite Nikola Gruevski”.

Toth’s party MSZP, heir to the former Communist party, has been out of office since 2010 when its last term ended in humiliation, and currently holds just 15 seats in the 200 seat Parliament.
