Zaev to attend Brussels meeting

SDSM leader Zoran Zaev and a party delegation will attend Wednesday’s meeting with European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn in Brussels on Wednesday, the party has confirmed.

“We see the declaration of Commissioner Hahn and OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier that the OSCE/ODIHR final report on the 2014 early parliamentary elections pointed to a number of shortcomings, along with the need for the country’s responsible institutions to fully and urgently implement ODIHR’s recommendations on electoral processes, as well as the call to political leaders to settle outstanding issues, i.e. compose a government that will prepare and administer the following elections, as a strong confirmation of the Commissioner’s positions articulated during the telephone conversation with president Zaev and the subsequent European Commission press release”, says SDSM.

According to the party, the pledge of Commissioner Hahn to tackle the essential issue the composition of a government that would administer fair and democratic elections opens the path to possible negotiations for settlement of the political crisis. SDSM expects principled talks based on equality. The Brussels meeting follows last week’s agreement among party leaders in Skopje, mediated by Commissioner Hahn, which included the holding of early parliamentary elections by the end of April 2016.
